6 reasons it’s time to get your own place

Sick of living with your parents? Reached the end of your rope when it comes to roommates? Sometimes you reach a point in your life when it's time to get your own place.

Saving for a deposit? We've got some tips and advice on how to keep your financial planning on track.

You need privacy

This is the first reason you might want to have your own home. Sharing a house means that there’s always someone knocking on the bathroom door or accidentally waking you up in the morning. It’s time to get your own place if you desperately need some ‘me-space.’ Everyone who has their own place knows there’s nothing better than the ability to do what you want, when you want.

You want to be independant

This means cooking and cleaning for yourself and only yourself. Maybe you lived in a share house previously and someone else did the cooking and cleaning for you. Or maybe you had to be the one to clean up after everyone else. No matter what, maybe it’s time to put yourself first. Learn some new skills and figure out how to cook something besides spaghetti bolognese for every meal.

You have too much stuff

If you don’t have your own place, you’re generally confined to a single room and only venturing out to a shared dining room for meals and entertainment. But as you progress through life, you collect a lot of stuff. Couches, blankets, pillows, desks, tables, lights. The list goes on, and your small room and quickly feel much smaller. You might need to find your own place, simply to store all your belongings.

Your social life is non-existent

Living with others or your parents makes having friends over a bit difficult. Just like your furniture, they’ll be cramped into your one room. Entertaining guests for dinner parties or board game nights is impossible. And any romantic evenings are ruined when your guest runs into a roommate or parent at 11 at night.

You want to unleash your creative side

You want to paint your bedroom blue or you want to hang up pictures or artworks, but your roommates or your lease won’t let you. There’s something very satisfying in knowing that the only rules that apply to you are your own rules. It’s time to get your own place if you can’t live your best life in your current home.

You want to be closer to work

Sometimes this can be overlooked in the decision process of moving out of home, but it could have a big impact on your life. What’s your commute like? Plenty of people don’t want to move in order to save, but your savings may be being spent on travel expenses.
