There are 2 times of the year people nearly faint at their electricity bill: summer and winter. In summer, you’ll do anything to keep cool and that more than often means surrendering to air conditioning. In winter, we do just the same, however, we switch over to heating. Summer has already come and gone and if you’re dreading to even think of the heating bill, check out these low-cost methods below in keeping your home warm this winter.
Thinking of renovating to keep warm? Find a great cash out rate in minutes.
One of the simplest and most obvious way to keep your home warm is to use any resource necessary to keep the heat indoors. By investing in thicker curtains, you’ll actually be trapping in heat, preventing it from escaping through the windows. You can even buy curtains with thermal lining at an affordable price, making them a staple asset when it comes to keeping your home warm.
In order to keep the cold from moving to other areas of the house, make an effort to lock up and seal any unused rooms. You can use things like large beach towels or thick, woolen blankets. Stuff them under doors or in places where there’s a gap. Not only will it keep out the cold, but it’ll also save the heat you’ve created in the room you’re currently using or occupying.

Many heating systems come with a timer, meaning they’ll switch themselves off at a designated time. This is a fantastic way to save money during the cold seasons as you won’t be overusing the system and thereby jacking up your electricity bill. If your heating system doesn’t come with a timer, simply set a reminder or countdown on your phone according to when exactly you’d like to turn the heater off.
According to the UK’s National Energy Foundation (NEF), un-insulated floorboards contribute to 10 percent to the total amount of heat lost throughout a home.
We all go barefoot in our homes, but did you know that going barefoot in the colder months increases your risk of catching a virus? When our feet feel cold, the blood vessels in our nose constrict, meaning, it slows down the loss of heat, because it’s attempting to keep you warm.
Invest in large, woolen rugs and blankets to cover the floorboards in order to give yourself the best chance possible to make it through the winter without any sniffles.
With this one, you don’t even need to get to the point where you’re a sweaty mess. By simply taking 5-10 minutes every now and again to do some squats, lift some weights a few pushups, and if you’re up for it, a quick walk around the block. You’ll be getting your blood flowing and your heart pumping in no time, plus will be taking a stand against the dreaded ‘winter kilos’.
